Emma Harrison forfeited marriage and family years ago to care for her ailing mother and now she helps her father design bridges. When her old love reappears to oversee the current engineering project, Emma’s life is thrown into chaos as her father becomes ill once again, Jack decides he wants Emma, and Emma is suddenly making the rounds of routs and balls.
Once the charity boy, Jack Stanton is now a wealthy man. He is overseeing a bridge project that somehow involves the lovely Emma Harrison. The old feelings he has had for Emma come back full force the more time he spends with her and it isn’t long before he decides to win her for his own.
Set in 1846 and the Industrial Era, A CHRISTMAS WEDDING WAGER pits a brainy young woman against the man she had tender feelings for in her younger years. Jack is a man who has made a name for himself, working his way up from charity to wealth by hard work and determination. Both characters are admirable in that they knew what they wanted and set out to get it, yet I did not feel the chemistry I hoped between the hero and heroine. Both Jack and Emma’s personalities unfold in a gradual way and yet the romance does not quite speak of “forever” for this reader. A pleasant little holiday tale, A CHRISTMAS WEDDING WAGER by Michelle Styles follows a familiar pattern from beginning to end; I only wish there had been a little more freshness to the storyline.
